讀一讀莎翁說「黑」。談「以醜為美」。

if it were, it bore not beauty's name; 

如果是，它沒有美麗的名字;

on

In the old age black was not

 counted fair, 

          

黑色在古時候並不算美，

Or if it were, it bore not

 beauty's name; 

               

即便算是，也沒有把美的名掛上；

But now is black beauty's 

successive heir,  

        

然而如今它成了美的繼承人

And beauty slander'd with

 a bastard shame:  

      

於是美就招來了侮辱與誹謗：

For since each hand hath 

put on Nature's power,

因為每隻手都有自然的力量,

Fairing the foul with Art's 

false borrow'd face, 

      

用藝術假面來美化醜惡，

Sweet beauty hath no name, 

no holy bower,   

    

恬美便失卻閨閣般嫻淑，

But is profan'd, if not lives in disgrace.  

               

縱然不忍辱偷生，也遭了褻瀆。

Therefore my mistress' brows 

are raven black,

Her eyes so suited, 

and they mourners seem

 no beauty lack,

Slandering creation with a 

false esteem:

Yet so they mourn, becoming 

of their woe,

That every tongue says 

beauty should look so.
